STONELEAF is proud to present Lizania Cruz’s “A Freedom Budget Provides Healthcare For All” and “A Freedom Budget Provides Childcare For All”. These works are a continuation of Cruz’s “Freedom Budget” project, with previous works presented at BAM Brooklyn, curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah which was featured in the New York Times.

A Freedom Budget for All Americans,” an economic policy plan put together by A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin and cosigned by Dr. King. “What is most striking is that a lot of the things they were asking for are things you would see today — health care for all, basic income, education for all, clean air and clean water,” Cruz said. For example the current fight to raise the minimum wage to $15. The freedom budget proposed a raise to $2 in 1967 which will be equivalent to $15 today. “I’m interested in pushing this conversation further. What could be a freedom budget from the government for the people?”

Lizania Cruz was a STONELEAF artist-in-residence in 2019.
