ABOUT CHERYL MUKHERJI

My work is an exploration of origin and inheritance–which is embedded in the figure of my mother and her presence in the family albums. It deals with memory, personal and collective history, transgenerational trauma--and how they inform identity. Currently, I am exploring the legacies and conventions of matrimonial portrait photography for arranged marriages in vernacular archives. Inspired by my mother's matrimonial photographs, I am reimagining the tradition in the context of post-colonial India using photography, printmaking, text, and video to create a counter-archive that articulates new possibilities for pleasure, play, performance, and interiority.
